Theme: Public Education

Location(s): Outside the Lower Mainland

Description:

The field placement would be a combination of in class and place based education experiences. Students would assist in the planning and implementation of the cultural experiences with the support of our indigenous coordinators, indigenous language instructors, and local elders. The experiences could include overnight trips to the school camp, language immersion, fishing excursions, overnight excursions to one of our 7 remote communities, and presenting to students. Student would also have the opportunity to learn about:

- Northern Distance Learning, a modern synchronous education program that provides academic courses to 20 remote communities across the Northwest Territories

- Indigenous education practices and culture based programming

- Language lessons with local Indigenous Language Instructors

- Inclusive school practices

- Trauma Based Education Practices

- And more …

With assistance from our education team, we will aide in the development of an indigenous lesson that is reflective of the local culture that can be presented to classes of your choice. Our team of consultants are supportive and will provide feedback and support throughout your three week visit.

It is our hope that by the end of your experience you will gain a deeper understanding of what life is like in the remote northern regions of Canada, and an appreciation for the culture and traditions of the indigenous people from the Northwest Territories.

Associated Costs:

BDDEC would like to offer 4 students the opportunity to experience the most northernly education district in the Northwest Territories. As part of the partnership with the University of British Columbia, BDDEC will arrange and cover all costs associated with travel and accomodations. The student candidates would only be responsible for providing their own meals during their three week stay.
