At Cheakamus Centre, teacher candidates (TCs) will be provided with a wide range of opportunities to collaborate with and support program instructional staff in a variety of environmental and indigenous learning programs. From field studies focusing on forest and salmon ecology, to assisting students cook meals with hot rocks in a traditional Coast Salish longhouse, CFE students at Cheakamus Centre will find many outdoor and experiential applications to support their teaching practice.
During the weeks of the TC placements, Cheakamus Centre welcomes elementary and secondary aged student groups and high school leadership candidates to our Outdoor School and Field School programs. Cheakamus programs have been designed to support the current BC Curriculum and focus on using outdoor and place-based learning to promote student engagement and connection across a range of subject areas and competencies.
$150/week charge is inclusive of all meals and snacks, shared accommodation and return transportation from North Vancouver to the Centre at the beginning and end of each week. The kitchen and chef are able to cater to a wide range of dietary needs and meals are prepared with fresh and local ingredients.
Candidates need to provide their own transportation to school bus pick up and drop off location in North Vancouver. Transportation to Cheakamus Centre departs North Vancouver on Monday mornings, with a return trip on Friday afternoons. No mid-week transportation provided. Candidates may bring their own vehicles if they choose.
