A three-week field experience would involve engagement with all aspects of program planning and delivery in the gallery context. At the Contemporary Art Gallery, we believe that access to, enjoyment of and engagement with contemporary art and artists should be available and open to all. Through our learning programs and community partnerships, we strive to create accessible and inclusive opportunities for critical reflection, creative thinking and connection to the world through art and art-making. CAG has in-depth partnerships with a number of secondary and elementary schools, allowing us to connect students and teachers with artists and contemporary art practice. CAG school visits encourage close looking, analysis and interpretation of artwork through interactive, inquiry-based tours as well as experimentation with contemporary materials and processes through creative art-making sessions. For the field placement, a UBC student will have the opportunity to meet with some of our school and community partners, support planning for current and upcoming collaborative projects, develop skills in non-formal and inquiry-based learning, lead guided visits with school groups, and contribute to the development of lesson plans and teacher guides, highlighting ties to current and upcoming exhibitions with the BC curriculum. Placement preference given to Fine Arts students then students with experience teaching art or background in art.
