The primary learning support teacher candidate would observe and eventually provide in-class and/or pull-out support to kindergarten and grade 1 classes. The teacher candidate would be introduced to programs such as Story Workshop and Kindergarten Talking Tables (oral language intervention). Grade 1 programs would consist of guided reading groups and possibly grade 1 Leveled Literacy Intervention (small group instruction).
The teacher candidate could possibly observe some standardized testing such as TOPA (test of phonological awareness), and would be taught how to administer informal assessments such as PM benchmark or Fountas and Pinnel running records and perhaps Words Their Way spelling assessment.
The Gibson Kindergarten Team will be participating in a SET-BC classroom based project so the teacher candidate would have access to a small crate of 5 student iPads, LCD projector, and document camera in each kindergarten, and combined kindergarten/grade 1 classes. The Gibson primary staff is also involved in a primary literacy community (PLC) so the teacher candidate may be able to participate in PLC if there are any meetings and collaboration opportunities in June.
