Description: At HUB Cycling our aim is to get more people cycling, more often to create healthier, happier, more connected communities. One way we accomplish this is by teaching engaging educational courses across Metro Vancouver to thousands of youth and adults annually. Our courses aim to build the skills and confidence needed for safe and enjoyable urban cycling.Under the direction of the Bike Education Manager, teacher candidates would primarily work alongside HUB's Bike Education Instructors as they deliver two core curriculums to elementary and middle school students (Grd. 3-7) during the Spring 2022 Bike to School season. Programs takes place during the school day across the region, which means frequent travel to municipalities around Metro Vancouver and often early starts to the day. Over the three week period, teacher candidates would be exposed to how bike safety lessons are taught in a variety of contexts; whether that's through classroom discussion or trivia games, outside on the school ground using simulated traffic scenarios, or by taking students on immersive bike rides through the neighbourhood. Candidates will therefore need to have access to their own bicycle and be comfortable riding it at programs. All members of HUB's education team also work closely with school staff to confirm program logistics and ensure we're meeting different learners' needs - creating a fun and engaging program for everyone involved! Opportunities may also arise to take part in our Bike to School Week event or adult cycling education programs that may be scheduled within the date range of the field experience.
Associated Costs: There would be little to no costs associated with a placement with HUB Cycling. Programs are delivered to schools across Metro Vancouver, and transit/travel costs are covered by the organization. However, due to the nature of our programs, teacher candidates would need to have access to a bicycle for the duration of the field experience. Food and accommodation is also the responsibility of the candidate.
