At Let’s Talk Science we do all kinds of science outreach, from super cool events to in-class hands-on fun! Our goal with you is to maximize your exposure to as many things as possible here, to both prep you for your own hands-on teaching, but also so you know how we work, so you can better use our services in the future should you so choose.
A three-week experience would look something like this:
The first day would be an orientation, introducing you to our organization, our goals, and the methods that we use for science outreach: Basically, showing you the ropes! We would then have you shadow one of our events to show you how we conduct outreach! After that we’d assign you to projects and set up science outreach visits for you. These projects include designing and/or updating our STEM outreach activities, designing and implementing evaluations for our audience so that we can track our impact, and assisting in the organization and facilitation of our outreach events, including the Let’s Talk Science Challenge or our Summer Camp. So one week you could help out with the LTS Challenge, which is a game-show like competition for kids in grades 5-7. The next two weeks could include helping with the organization of upcoming events, and coming up with ideas for in-class visits, while also participating in class visits, where you and other volunteers would visit classrooms around Vancouver and Surrey, doing hands-on activities that you helped design! We would end with a reflection period of how these activities worked, and what you will take with you to your teaching jobs!
Overall, you will learn activity creation, hands-on teaching, and event planning skills. You will also gain the experience of being a volunteer coming to a classroom, and so will be better prepared as teachers. We also hope to show you the different ways to engage in science learning aside from just in the classroom, so you can better facilitate holistic science learning.
