Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society members believe that individuals with Down Syndrome are capable of full participation in society and should be given the opportunity to develop their potential. To make this mission come to life, the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society aims to:
- Provide information, support, and resources to individuals with Down Syndrome in BC and their families.
- Provide information about Down Syndrome and resources to people and organizations who support individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.
- Advocate that governments and appropriate agencies provide the special resources often needed by individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.
There are numerous tasks/jobs that the UBC teacher candidates could engage in during their CFE at the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society. For example, if the teacher candidate is helping to organize a program or event then the task would be booking speakers, arranging venues, or outings, working to recruit volunteers.
The organization is also looking for a teacher candidate who is comfortable working independently 1 to 1 with parents and their children in assessing children's capabilities and developing learning objectives and related activities. This is an excellent placement for a teacher candidate who already some experience working with children with challenges, and who wish to expand their skills and experience working with children with a wide variety of challenges related to Down Syndrome.
Teacher candidates who are comfortable speaking to the public, and working with those who have Down syndrome would enjoy a CFE at the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society.
