NSCR recognizes both the important role caregivers hold, and the prevalence of informal caregiving within Metro Vancouver. Our Caregiver Support Program is focused on supporting informal caregivers to navigate the multiple challenges of caregiving, facilitated through: 1-1 consultation, educational workshops, monthly support groups, and referrals to community resources.
Our program serves 500 caregivers on the North Shore. The students will support a pilot project of working with 12 volunteer coaches to cultivate new leadership skills and intercultural connections between seniors and older adults who are family caregivers. Students and caregivers will gain insight from volunteer coach mentors in better understanding and articulating their needs for social emotional well-being, through participation in activities that will extend their social networks and build trust, community connectedness, confidence, and critical thinking skills in facing challenges when navigating an increasingly complex healthcare system while caring for a loved one.
The project will seek to specifically engage seniors who are part of communities facing additional barriers to services including Indigenous persons from local Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish nations, and newcomers of Persian background.
