North Shore Neighbourhood House – Edible Garden Project

Theme: Sustainability/Environmental Education

Location(s): North and West Vancouver

Description:

The Edible Garden Project is involved with food and gardening education on the North Shore in many ways. We partner with 6 elementary schools, to provide once-monthly, garden-based educational sessions throughout the school year. A field experience with us would include visiting the schools along with our Education Coordinator to help facilitate 40 minute lessons to multiple ages/classes within each school based on a monthly theme. Each of our lessons is connected to the BC Curriculum, so teacher candidates would learn ways to utilize school gardens as a valuable tool for outdoor experiential education.

Elementary/Middle Years

We partner with a number of after-school gardening clubs, including at the North Shore Neighbourhood House. Ideally, the teacher candidate would aid in developing those programs to reach a more diverse group of youth from across the North Shore. Depending on candidate interest, we are also looking to increase the accessibility of our programming, by developing garden-based lesson plans geared to diverse learning needs.

Secondary

We partner with 6 elementary schools, to provide once-monthly, garden-based educational sessions throughout the school year, but lack similar outreach in secondary schools. Ideally, the teacher candidate would aid in the development of high-school age focused lesson plans, to strengthen and expand our ties with high schools, and hopefully expand our programming to reach more youth from across the North Shore. In addition, we partner with a local high school to co-facilitate the after-school gardening program, and this could be expanded either within the school or developed into others. Depending on candidate interest, we are also looking to increase the accessibility of our programming, by developing garden-based lesson plans geared to diverse learning needs.
