During the three weeks, teacher candidates will have the opportunity to literally peel back the curtain on a professional performing arts company. Vancouver Opera offers education programs for elementary, secondary and post secondary students from across Metro Vancouver as well as supporting community based programs that are based on civic impact. Mentored by a former teacher and faculty advisor, teacher candidates will be exposed to the myriad of possibilities that organizations, such as Vancouver Opera, offer to educators including curriculum support, arts based learning and the impact of story telling on a grand scale. Vancouver Opera also has an established program that addresses the calls to action in education from the Truth & Reconciliation Commission addressing the First Nations Principles of Learning.
Teacher candidates will also have the opportunity to build their networks outside the education field with community partners and businesses that are dedicated to supporting arts education in schools. Specific opportunities include observing full participation in the Vancouver Opera Festival, including backstage access to two productions, production of large-scale community events and contributing to education programming for the 2018/19 season.
VO benefits greatly from the input of teacher candidates in improving current programming to better meet the needs of students. At all points during the experience, teacher candidates are invited to provide feedback. They will also have the opportunity to develop their skills in collaborating with Teaching Artists in the implementation of arts based curriculum. Interested teacher candidates should have a background in opera, music and/or theatre.
